KARACHI: The Young Doctors Association (YDA) Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) staged a protest on Tuesday against an alleged incident of harassment involving a doctor in the Urology Department. The demonstration expressed solidarity with postgraduate trainees (PGs) and faculty members of the department, calling for swift action to address the issue.
The protest followed the earlier announcement by JPMC's administration that a committee had been constituted to investigate allegations of harassment in the Urology Department. According to reports, the incident has raised serious concerns among the hospital’s doctors, prompting demands for accountability and justice.
During the protest, Chairman YDA Sindh, Dr. Farrukh Rauf, emphasized the association’s commitment to protecting the rights of young doctors. “We demand an immediate, fair, and transparent investigation into this incident to eliminate the fear created in the hearts and minds of doctors,” he stated.
Patron YDA Sindh, Dr. Umar Sultan, echoed these sentiments, declaring, “YDA has always stood firm against any abuse of its members. Those who believe they can get away with harassing young doctors should think again. We will pursue this matter to its conclusion and will not tolerate such behavior under any circumstances.”
President YDA JPMC, Dr. Waheed Jani, reiterated the association’s solidarity with the affected PGs and faculty, urging the administration to act decisively.
The YDA has demanded an independent inquiry to identify those responsible and ensure accountability. Meanwhile, the JPMC administration has assured stakeholders of a thorough and impartial investigation through the committee formed earlier in the day.
This incident has sparked a wider discussion about workplace safety and harassment policies within healthcare institutions, highlighting the urgent need for systemic reforms to safeguard professionals in their work environment.
