Sindh reduces infant mortality to half of national average

KARACHI: The Sindh government has succeeded in reducing the province’s infant mortality rate to nearly half of the national average, in collaboration with ChildLife Foundation, enhancing healthcare for children through progressive public-private partnerships.
A recent study by the U.S.-based PALISI Global Health Network (2021-2022) that assessed pediatric emergency rooms (ERs) at Karachi’s Civil Hospital and Larkana’s Sheikh Zayed Children’s Hospital, found a mortality rate of 1.2pc for critically ill children (aged above one month) in these facilities, matching the standards of Pakistan’s top private hospitals.
Sindh government has also strengthened emergency pediatric care through its partnership with ChildLife Foundation.
The expansion of emergency services has been central to the province’s healthcare strategy, with ChildLife Foundation playing a critical role in modernizing pediatric ERs across Sindh
In collaboration with the Sindh government, ChildLife now manages nine emergency rooms in major public hospitals, while its telemedicine network extends across all tehsils, ensuring no child is more than 30 minutes away from quality emergency care.
Over the past 14 years, Sindh’s public-private partnership model has provided life-saving interventions to over six million children in emergency rooms province-wide. By integrating telemedicine across rural areas, the initiative has brought essential healthcare within reach for families in underserved communities.
Sindh’s partnership with ChildLife Foundation demonstrates how collaborative, community-focused innovation can significantly improve health outcomes for children.
ChildLife Foundation now provides free, round-the-clock treatment to over two million children annually across Pakistan, managing children’s ERs and Telemedicine Satellite Centers in more than 300 public sector hospitals, with the aim of making quality emergency care accessible to all.
