Rheumatoid Arthritis Unit Being Established at DUHS

KARACHI- Keeping in view the growing burden of arthritis, bone and joints diseases, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has decided to establish a new department tilted 'Rheumatoid Arthritis' (RA) within the 'Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPM&R) by the start of next year.


This was announced by Director Finance, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), while he was speaking a seminar as chief guest at the Arag Auditorium of DUHS. The Seminar was arranged by IPMNR regarding 'World occupational therapy day'. Additional Director (IPM&R) Dr Syed Imran Ahmed, Farzana  Ashfaq  and others also addressed the seminar.



Nadeem Shakoor also said that In 'Rheumatoid Arthritis' Department, the patients affected by arthritis will not only be treated, they will be also taught to change their life style in case of presence of disease. Additionally, special training will be given to students for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis patients.


He said that the vision of DUHS's Vice Chancellor is to spend all financial resources for serving health and education facilities, by neglecting all unnecessary expenditures. IPM&R is serving individuals affected from various disabilities and their families, the financial needs of this institute will be fulfilled.



On this occasion Shahida Zakir Khan was given tribute for training services of occupational therapy in Pakistan.


Earlier, The Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation's senior lecturer Farzana Ashfaq, on the completion of 10 years of establishment of institute, highlighted the successful targets achieved, saying that from its establishment in 2007 till today, the institute has crossed a new milestone every year.


She said that in the beginning, its OPD consisted of only 10 patients, and it has expanded to accommodate 150 patients today. She said that this institute is the first ever civil institute which is serving occupational therapy, and in this institute, patients not only from interior Sindh but also from KPK come for treatment.


She said that individuals that are suffering from any physical disability due to paralysis, road traffic accidents and terrorism are provided services here. The institute has now also developed the ability to manufacture those instruments which were earlier imported from other countries and provide them to patients. At the end of seminar, certificates were also given to students and teachers of the institute.
