JSMU to be first to launch specialized diploma in Urogynaecology

KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) is set to become Pakistan's first public sector university to offer specialized diploma courses in Urogynaecology, announces Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon.

This programme was unveiled during the International Urogynaecology Symposium, held in collaboration with the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

Prof Haleema Yasmin, Head of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at JPMC and organiser of the event, emphasised the significant impact of urogynaecological conditions on women’s health and quality of life.

“Pelvic floor disorders, urinary incontinence, and other urogynaecological issues are often overlooked, leading to unnecessary suffering for many women,” she stated.

The symposium aimed to raise awareness about these critical health concerns and discuss management strategies, including the introduction of diploma courses in Urogynaecology, Gynaecological Oncology, and Feto-Maternal Medicine.

Supporting the initiative, Prof Memon announced that the Urogynaecology diploma course is scheduled to commence in January 2025, with a duration of one year. Faculty members for the programme have already received training from Aga Khan University (AKU) as part of a collaborative effort between JSMU, JPMC, and AKU.

Registrar Dr. Azam Khan reaffirmed JSMU’s commitment to enhancing the skills of healthcare professionals through high-quality continuing medical education. He said, “The credit hours awarded by our CME department, led by Dr. Rahat Naz, to participants of the International Urogynaecology Symposium will further equip attendees in this vital area of women’s health.”

The symposium addressed various topics, including surgical approaches to pelvic organ prolapse, fistula care, the role of urodynamic testing, and the importance of dispelling myths surrounding urogynaecology.

Prof Yasmin stressed the necessity of a holistic approach to improving care for women affected by these conditions.

Leading gynecologists and urologists from Karachi attended the event, sharing knowledge, discussing the latest advancements, and exploring effective management strategies. The event was virtually patroned by Prof Khurshid Noorani, with facilitation by Dr. Maimoona Rehman and Dr. Omaima Akhtar from Ward 8.
