Spread awareness and Stop Resistance is the theme of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2021 as announced by The AMR Tripartite Organization, the Food Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO), the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

What Is World Antimicrobial Awareness Week?

WAAW is celebrated every year from November 18th to November 24th. This camping is basically based on to increase the awareness regarding antimicrobial resistance. The importance is given to stress on the importance of maintaining the best healthcare practices in order to stop the spread of drug resistance infection.

Where Does It Come From?

World antimicrobial awareness week was first started from Europe. This initiative was taken to increase the perception about antibiotic resistance. It was mainly done among the health care workers and general public. Later on, more countries joined to further spread the cause globally.

In order to avoid the outspread of drug resistance infection World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is celebrated annually. The focus of the movement is to educate people to obtain better health care protection and to stop the emerging problem of resistance to antibiotics. The aim is to aware people about this through education training and fruitful communication.

The main goals WHO is focusing on are

  • Raising awareness and guiding people about antibiotics
  • Expanding research under great supervision
  • Introducing new ways to reduce infections as much as possible[MH8] 
  • Educating the general public to use the medicines in more effective ways

How to Observe World Antibiotic Awareness Week?

  • Make it common among children: Continuously ask children to stay hygienic. Tell them to wash their hands before and after eating, especially after coming home from outside. Ask them to maintain a distance from a sick person. Teach them to cover their wounds and avoid touching them.
  • Eat Healthy: Always guide people towards a healthy diet. Focus more on vegetables and fruit. As they hold more nutritional value. Try to add garlic, ginger or onion as they contain anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties.

WAAW is no doubt a very important event. As it helps people to know more about antimicrobial infection. This event helps in taking precautionary measures and enables us to be prepared whenever we visit doctor which indirectly helps doctor to diagnose disease much better for effective treatment.
