KARACHI- Spencer Eye Hospital, a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) run hospital, is said to be reintroducing their Cornea Transplantation Surgery, also known as Corneal Grafting, free of cost.

It was revealed that three to four surgeries would be performed every month within the health facility.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony will soon be held between Mayor Karachi, Dr Waseem Akhtar and representatives of Lions Clubs International.

Senior Director, Medical and Health Services (M&HS), KMC, Dr Birbal Genani informed that Spencer Eye Hospital had decided to launch Cornea Grafting surgery after a lapse of ten years. He added that Spencer Eye Hospital was the pioneer in corneal transplant surgeries in Sindh. Unfortunately, the services were suspended due to lack of interest from the concerned authorities of KMC.
Moreover, he explained that corneal transplantation, also known as corneal grafting, was a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea was replaced with donated corneal tissue.

He added that Lions Clubs International‘s management had agreed to donate 3 to 4 corneas every month, to facilitate Spencer Eye Hospital patients.

Furthermore, Dr Genani discussed the cost of this specialized surgery, which ranged between Rs70,000 to 80,000 at private eye care health facilities but would be performed free of charge at Spencer Eye Hospital.
