Men Suicide Rate in Pakistan
Men have consistently higher rates than women; in Larkana, Sindh province, the highest rate for men was 7.06 per 100,000 between the ages of 20 and 40. Given the legal, sociocultural, and religious shame associated with suicide in Pakistan, we feel that these numbers are an underestimate.
Between 15 and 35 individuals in Pakistan die each day due to suicide.
That's a suicide rate of about one person each hour, on average.
It was projected by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2012 that Pakistan had a suicide rate of 7.5 per 100,000 persons. Approximately 13,000 persons committed suicide that year.
In 2016, the figure was 2.9 deaths per 100,000 people or 5,500 deaths. The actual number of fatalities maybe somewhere between the two estimates, but the reality is still unknown. These efforts aim to break the silence by offering an outlet for people who have been affected and information from experts, and links to some of the country's suicide assistance organizations.
