KARACHI: “With the start of the latest Institute of Medical Education, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) now has nine constituent units imparting undergraduate and postgraduate level education in medicine and allied health sciences,” said Prof Tariq Rafi, Vice Chancellor JSMU, at an iftar dinner hosted for media representatives.

He recounted the university’s journey from its beginning in 2012 with only Sindh Medical College as a constituent and applauded the efforts of his faculty and staff in working with dedication to achieve milestone after milestone in a short time of seven years.

“Our latest MPhil program in clinical and histopathology has been designed keeping in mind the shortage of highly qualified pathologists in a country with a burgeoning population. It is part of our vision and mission to produce competent and ethical healthcare professionals according to the needs of the healthcare sector in Sindh," he said. JSMU's Institute of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation and College of Nursing have already started classes while the new Institute of Family Medicine is launching a service model outpatient clinic for the benefit of the masses.

JSMU's dental outpatients' clinic at its Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences and its Diagnostics Laboratory is already catering to a large number of patients daily charging a nominal fee only.

Prof Tariq Rafi also briefed the press about the five-year plan JSMU has developed for Nagarparkar and Diplo districts covering the issues of livelihood, live stocks, agriculture, drinking water, irrigation water, health education and other factors in the community.

JSMU teams visited these two assigned districts in Tharparkar according to Sindh Government’s program of uplifting the conditions in the desert, and work to assess the needs of the population and provide free clinics and referrals.
