KARACHI: Pakistan has reported two more polio cases, bringing the total number of cases in 2025 to five. The latest cases have been confirmed in Qambar Shahdadkot District, Sindh, and Mandi Bahauddin, Punjab.

This marks the third polio case in Sindh this year, while Punjab has reported its first case. The growing number of cases highlights the persistent challenges in Pakistan’s fight against polio, despite ongoing vaccination efforts.

Earlier this month, the Shehbaz-led government launched Pakistan’s first nationwide anti-polio campaign of 2025, aiming to curb the spread of the virus. However, refusals to vaccinate, as reported by Medical News Pakistan, continue to hinder eradication efforts in several regions.

Polio Cases in 2024: A Persistent Threat

Last year, Pakistan reported 74 polio cases, distributed as follows:

  • Balochistan: 27 cases
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 22 cases
  • Sindh: 23 cases
  • Punjab: 1 case
  • Islamabad: 1 case

The resurgence of polio in 2024, which continues into 2025, underscores the need for stronger vaccination drives, enhanced community awareness, and better access to immunization services in high-risk areas. Health officials stress that polio eradication remains a top priority, urging parents to ensure their children receive the necessary vaccines.

With new cases emerging despite ongoing efforts, the government and health authorities must intensify their campaigns to prevent further spread and finally eliminate polio from the country.
