Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre, Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), is a gift for people of the province.

This, he said, while talking to newsmen in front of SMBB Trauma Centre which was inauguratd by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Wednesday. Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, Health Minister Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar, Senior Minister for Education Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Food Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, CHK medical superintendent Prof Saeed Ahmed Qureshi were also present on the occasion.

Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that the trauma centre’s state-of-the-art emergency facilities will be provided to the people under one roof and thousands of patients will be able to get best possible treatment.

Sindh Minister for Health Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar said that the trauma center will be made functional in phases and the process of hiring employees for the centre will begin shortly.

Secretary Health Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo said that trauma centre will be run by provincial health department from its own resources and there is no plan to hand it over to any private organization.

Though the trauma centre built at an estimated cost of Rs5 billion will be housed in a 14-storey building, it will initially be made functional in a seven-storey building, providing treatment relating to burns injuries, eye, neurosurgery and heart ailments, etc.

The trauma center which could accommodate as many as 500 patients would have operation theaters, medical stores, parking facility, cafeteria, mosque and other facilities under one roof.

It may be pointed out that foundation-stone of the trauma centre was laid by former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani on Jan 10, 2009 and it was scheduled to be completed in 2012.
