HEC Scholarships - Over 35,000 students studying abroad

SWABI - Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) chairman Prof Dr Mukhtar Ahmed said here that educational expenses of over 35,000 Pakistani students, who are studying in various prestigious universities of the world, were being borne by the commission.

Speaking at an orientation programme held for the fresh students of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Prof Ahmed said that high-tech engineering was the key to prosperity and the country required competent and motivated manpower to address issues such as poverty and underdevelopment.

He urged the country’s leading educational institutions to play their role in nurturing the youth and preparing them for challenges of the future.

The GIKI, he added, has already proved its worth in teaching and research field.

Welcoming the new batch of students, GIKI Rector Jehangir Bashar, said that the Institute’s competent faculty was committed to its cause and its alumni has made its presence felt in both Pakistan and abroad.

Prof Dr Habibullah Jamal said about 5,000 applications were received by GIKI for admission to different engineering disciplines this year and only 10 per cent of them could manage to make it through.

President of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan, Engr. Shamul Mulk, also spoke on the occasion.
