MANHATTAN: A U.S.-based medtech startup is developing technology to detect early-stage cancer in solid tumors using light emissions, offering a non-invasive alternative to traditional biopsies or blood draws.
The Manhattan Beach-based company, HelioFlux Inc., utilizes a method that identifies unique light signatures emitted by cancer cells due to their rapid metabolism. Discovered by biophysics researcher Dr. Nirosha Murugan, the innovation has shown potential in animal studies and could revolutionize early cancer detection if human trials prove successful.
Designed for both clinical use and wearable devices, the technology aims to provide safe, frequent cancer screenings with no physical risk to patients. While challenges such as ambient light interference remain, efforts to refine accuracy are underway.
If successful, the method could transform oncology by making early detection more accessible and reliable worldwide.
