MN Report

LAHORE - The Mayo Hospital administration has recently received instructions from the health department, asking them to dedicate the upper portion of the Quaid-i-AzamMusafirkhana for the establishment of a nephrology unit, since a charity organization has offered to re-build the facility.

The efforts of BilqeesSarwar Foundation, for rendering services for the poor patients, were also appreciated by the health department.

According to recent media reports; Adviser to Chief Minister on Health Khwaja Salman Rafique called an emergent meeting at the Civil Secretariat, recently  to discuss the proposal of the BSF for the provision of state-of-the-art nephrology unit at Mayo Hospital.

Health Secretary JawadRafique Malik, Health Director General Dr Zahid Pervez and Mayo Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr AmjadShahzad also attended the meeting.

A spokesman for the health department has also informed the media that; The participants in the meeting discussed the issue and chided the Mayo Hospital MS for not facilitating the charity organisation which had expressed its willingness to establish fully-fledged nephrology unit at a cost of Rs50 million.

He said Mr Rafique informed the meeting that the Punjab government had been encouraging the donors and philanthropists to share their services for the provision of treatment facilities to the patients all over the province. The adviser regretted that the BSF representatives faced embarrassment for a month for not finding space at the Mayo Hospital for materialising the patient-friendly scheme.

The health secretary and DG have also shared similar views and stressed that the charity organisation’s services should be acknowledged by facilitating them to a maximum level.

The spokesman has further statedthat; the meeting discussed various options to allocate space on the premises of the Mayo Hospital and finally decided to allocate upper floor of the Musafirkhana for the establishment of nephrology department.

“The meeting directed the MS of Mayo Hospital - Dr AmjadShahzad, to promptly get upper portion of the Musafirkhana vacated from attendants and hand it over to the BSF to start its scheme,” said the spokesman. The attendants of the patients would be shifted to the basement of the Musafirkhana, he added.
