Sindh bans baby formula sale without doctor’s prescription

KARACHI: The Sindh Government, led by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has taken a bold step to promote breastfeeding and improve child nutrition by banning the sale of baby formula milk without a doctor's prescription. This initiative is part of the Sindh Protection and Promotion of Breastfeeding and Child Nutrition Act, aimed at addressing the growing concerns about the misuse and over-promotion of artificial formula milk.

Key Highlights of the New Law

  • Mandatory Prescription for Formula Milk:
Artificial formula milk can no longer be sold without a certified doctor’s prescription. Violators will face fines up to Rs. 500,000 and six months of imprisonment.
  • Labeling Requirements for Formula Milk Companies:
Manufacturers must clearly print “Artificial Milk” on all formula milk packaging to inform consumers.
  • Regulations for Doctors:
Doctors prescribing formula milk without a valid reason risk license cancellation and complaints filed with the Infant Feeding Board.

The Case for Breastfeeding

A landmark 2016 study revealed that improving breastfeeding rates could save over 800,000 infant lives annually. Breastfeeding is universally recognized as the optimal source of nutrition for babies, providing essential nutrients and immunity-boosting benefits.

Catherine Russell, UNICEF’s Executive Director, emphasized:

“False and misleading messages about formula feeding are a substantial barrier to breastfeeding, which we know is best for babies and mothers.”

A Step Toward Healthier Futures

This law is a significant move to counteract aggressive marketing tactics by formula milk companies, which often undermine the importance of breastfeeding. The Sindh government’s initiative aims to empower mothers to make informed decisions while prioritizing the health and well-being of their children.

Impact and Public Awareness

This legislation is expected to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding while curbing the misuse of artificial formula milk. Public health campaigns are likely to follow, ensuring that parents and caregivers are educated about the benefits of breastfeeding and the risks of formula feeding.
