KARACHI: In a significant development, Karachi police have apprehended Manzoor Shah and his son, Mansoor Shah, proprietors of an unlicensed thalassemia center in the Saddar area, for allegedly threatening Dr. Dur e Naz Jamal, Secretary of the Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA).

The SBTA, established under the Sindh Safe Blood Transfusion Act of 2017, is tasked with ensuring the provision of safe blood transfusion services across the province. The authority's responsibilities include the registration and licensing of blood banks, hemovigilance, and the development of standards and guidelines to uphold blood safety.

According to official reports, the confrontation arose when the SBTA initiated regulatory actions against the Shahs' thalassemia center due to its unregistered status and non-compliance with provincial health regulations. In retaliation, the accused allegedly issued threats to Dr. Jamal, aiming to deter further enforcement measures.

Law enforcement agencies responded promptly, registering a case against the duo and subsequently arresting them. The charges include intimidation and obstruction of a public servant in the performance of official duties.

This incident underscores the SBTA's unwavering commitment to regulating blood transfusion services in Sindh. The authority continues to work diligently to ensure that all blood banks and related centers operate within the legal framework, prioritizing patient safety and adherence to established medical standards.

The medical community and public health advocates have expressed support for Dr. Jamal and the SBTA's efforts to uphold the integrity of blood transfusion services. They emphasize the importance of strict regulatory compliance to prevent malpractices that could endanger patients' lives.

As the investigation progresses, authorities have reiterated their stance against any form of intimidation towards public officials. They affirm that such actions will be met with the full force of the law to maintain the sanctity of public service and health governance.
