Despite the ongoing evolution of the virus, experts assure that current COVID tests, including at-home antigen and PCR tests, effectively detect infections caused by new variants, provided the tests are not expired. Both variants, descendants of Omicron, are being closely monitored by the CDC and NIH to ensure test efficacy remains intact.
Eris, now the dominant variant in the US, accounts for 21.5% of cases, while Pirola, known for its high mutation count, has been detected in several US states. While existing tests were designed to target stable parts of the virus less prone to mutation, agencies like the FDA are prepared to adjust testing protocols if necessary.
For accurate results, the CDC advises proper use of tests: test immediately if symptomatic or wait five days post-exposure if asymptomatic. PCR tests are more reliable, but antigen tests can be effective if followed by retesting within 48 hours after a negative result.
To combat rising COVID cases, ensure your at-home kits are within their extended expiration dates by checking the FDA's updated list. Testing remains a crucial tool in protecting vulnerable populations, especially as colder weather increases the spread of respiratory viruses.
