ISLAMABAD: Shaheed Zulifkar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) has announced plans to introduce DNA testing in collaboration with the private sector, marking the first such initiative in Pakistan. This announcement was made by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Tariq Iqbal during the thirtieth meeting of the Syndicate Board.
Currently, DNA testing is not available within the country, necessitating that blood samples from patients are sent abroad, costing between 100,000 to 150,000 rupees per test. Prof. Iqbal emphasized that leveraging the expertise of SZABMU’s scientists can significantly reduce costs while enhancing accessibility.
In addition, the university will soon offer a PhD program in clinical sciences, aligning with Higher Education Commission (HEC) policies. To support this initiative, SZABMU has allocated substantial funding to boost research capabilities, aiming to enhance the quality of its research output.
During the meeting, the Vice Chancellor reported on the recent MD CAT examination, which saw participation from 21,884 students. The examination papers were prepared following the guidelines set by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). Following intelligence from security agencies, 16 individuals were arrested for attempting to use illicit materials during the examination. The board commended the examination's transparency and called for strict measures against those undermining its integrity.
Additionally, the board reviewed an impressive performance report from the Health Care Commission of the School of Dentistry, a subsidiary of the university.
Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhary (MNA) praised Prof. Iqbal’s contributions, particularly in the Department of Burn Surgery, highlighting successful projects such as the Burn Center and the School of Dentistry. He stressed that these initiatives could significantly enhance patient care in hospitals.
Addressing the Central Induction Policy, Dr. Chaudhary reiterated that the university holds the legal responsibility for all educational and training activities at PIMS Hospital, including the induction of postgraduate trainees across all departments.
