KARACHI: Dr Azra Pechuho, Minister for Health and Population Welfare, Sindh, chaired a meeting regarding the province's ongoing Dengue and vector-borne diseases concerns.
The meeting was attended by Dr Juman Bahoto, Director-General (DG), Dr Irshad Memon, the Project Manager of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) and Dr Theerthadas, Additional Director (AD) of Vector-Borne Diseases (VBD), among others.
Currently, there are 131 sentinel sites in the province that are equipped to identify and treat Dengue.
It was also announced in the meeting that there had been 3270 cases of Dengue reported so far in this year. March to April is the low transmission season for Dengue, whereas the high transmission period of the year is August to November.
This current month has had 1291 cases reported so far. The highest number of cases in Karachi was in District East, whereas District Central had 169 cases. In October, Hyderabad reported 241 cases of Dengue.
The meeting and its attendants were made aware that in 2019, the total number of dengue cases reported were 16,925, and 46 people died. In the year 2020, there were 4380 cases of Dengue reported, and three people died.
This year 15 people have died due to Dengue. Six hundred seventy-five beds have been appointed for dengue patients across the public hospitals in Sindh. 58 patients who were severely ill due to Dengue were treated in the public hospitals of Sindh.
