KARACHI: Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Administrator of Karachi, Spokesman for the Sindh government and Advisor to the Chief Minister on Law, recently proclaimed that sexual harassment cases should be completed within 90 days. Still, instead, those cases can take up to 20 months.
"Cases of sexual harassment are increasing due to late verdicts. The judiciary, civil society and the government must come to a consensus on this issue, especially sexual harassment cases, as soon as possible," the Administrator said while addressing a seminar under the United Nation's (UN) Women's Programme.
"I would like to tell you today that my mother trained me very well after my father passed away when I was 19 years old," the Administrator began. He said that his mother brought him to this place alone and trained and guided him at every stage.
"My father's early death made my mother empowered financially and administratively, and that's what she passed on to me so that I could carry on the training she provided and serve the people. My grandmother gave my mother a good education and training, which made all this possible," he said.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that a woman should be empowered to decide for herself what she should do, instead of letting the elders of the house try to impose their decisions on her.
"When a woman is empowered, she will be able to lead her home in the right way," he said. "Only a woman can change our society because a woman's lap is the child's first school."
The Administrator noted that in rural and urban areas, women are empowered in some cases, but they are ignored, and their decisions are not considered.
"We must give women their due respect and acknowledge their decisions," he concluded.
