The hidden risks of injectable beauty treatments

By Dr Farha Ansari

Injectable treatments, such as Botox and dermal fillers, becoming an integral part of modern beauty culture, promise to smooth wrinkles, enhance facial features, and restore lost volume—all with minimal downtime, but experts caution against overlooking the risks and potential complications associated with these treatments.
One of the most critical concerns is the improper administration of injectables. Although they may appear straightforward, these procedures require skill and precision. When performed incorrectly, outcomes can range from mild side effects to severe complications.
Misplaced injections can lead to lumps, asymmetry, or tissue damage. In rare cases, accidental injection into blood vessels may result in severe consequences, such as tissue necrosis, blindness, or stroke. There is also the risk of nerve damage, which can cause numbness, muscle weakness, or altered facial expressions.
Allergic reactions and infections are additional risks. While most injectable materials are deemed safe, some individuals may experience redness, swelling, or even severe allergic responses like anaphylaxis. Infections can occur if the procedure is not performed in a sterile environment or if aftercare is neglected, potentially leading to scarring or prolonged complications.
Another growing concern is the overuse or misuse of injectables. Excessive use of Botox can result in a “frozen” or unnatural appearance, while overfilled areas such as cheeks or lips may create an imbalanced, exaggerated look. Mismanagement of fillers can even cause tissue displacement, leading to a hollow or distorted appearance over time.
The lack of regulation and prevalence of untrained practitioners further heighten the risks. In many regions, injectable treatments are offered by individuals with minimal medical training, often in non-medical settings like salons. This has also paved the way for counterfeit products, including fake Botox or fillers, which pose serious health hazards such as permanent scarring or severe reactions.
Long-term effects and unknown risks are another area of concern. While injectables are often marketed as safe and temporary, some materials may cause tissue breakdown or trigger autoimmune responses over time.
The psychological impact of these treatments also cannot be ignored. Unrealistic expectations or underlying body dysmorphia may drive individuals into a cycle of overuse, leaving them dissatisfied despite multiple procedures.
Experts stress the importance of exercising caution. Always choose a licensed and experienced medical professional for injectable treatments, ensuring they use FDA-approved products sourced from reputable manufacturers. A candid discussion with your practitioner about your goals, risks, and expectations is crucial for making an informed decision.
Injectables can enhance appearance when used judiciously, but beauty should ultimately be about confidence and self-acceptance. With careful consideration and professional guidance, you can safely explore these treatments while prioritising your health and well-being.
