Smog situation improves as Punjab govt. installs more AQMs

LAHORE: Efforts by the provincial government are yielding results as the intensity of smog decreases across Punjab, including in Lahore. To combat rising air pollution levels, 30 new air quality index (AQI) monitors have been installed in major cities across the province, with an additional 25 monitors planned for the next phase.
According to morning readings, Multan recorded the highest AQI in the country at 241, followed by Lahore at 215 and Peshawar at 154, reflecting the need for continued measures to address air quality challenges.
Enforcement actions in Lahore
Authorities in Lahore are intensifying actions against violations of "Green Lockdown" measures. Six shops and six restaurants were sealed for operating outside designated hours. Deputy Commissioner Lahore, Syed Musa Raza, urged citizens to take precautions during the smog season, including wearing masks and avoiding unnecessary travel. Special advisories were issued for protecting children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Enhanced air quality monitoring
The installation of AQI monitors has increased Lahore’s capacity to track air pollution with eight fixed monitors now operational, alongside five mobile units. Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb highlighted that the initiative connects all devices to a central control room and integrates them with global air quality monitoring systems.
Monitors have been strategically placed at locations including Punjab University, Wildlife Park Raiwind, and Teaching Hospital Shahdara. This advanced digital system is expected to provide accurate, real-time data, facilitating better smog management and public awareness.
India's struggle with air pollution
In neighboring India, cities like Delhi continue to battle severe smog, with AQI levels frequently crossing hazardous thresholds during winter. Similar challenges stem from stubble burning, industrial emissions, and vehicular pollution. Efforts to curb these factors have shown mixed results, underscoring the regional nature of the air pollution crisis in South Asia.
Government’s long-term vision
Authorities have committed to transparency by making AQI data publicly accessible, fostering a culture of accountability and awareness. This initiative marks a significant step towards tackling air pollution and safeguarding public health in Punjab.
