Stress management and productivity are closely linked. They can be described as
having a relationship similar to a bell-shaped curve. When there is too little or too much
stress then productivity decreases, but if there is a moderate amount of stress then
productivity increases.

How Moderate Stress Helps With Productivity

Enhanced Brain Function
According to research conducted at UC Berkeley by Daniela Kaufer, short-term and
moderate stress, like preparing for a speech, has a positive impact on mental
performance and memory. It helps with alertness and stimulates the growth of brain
cells.

Immune System Booster
Environmental stress has led to evolutionary changes in organisms to improve their
odds of survival, including better wound healing and repair. Similarly, when there is a
“threat”, like an upcoming exam, the body is more responsive to pain and mood
changes. As such, stress boosts the immune system and our productivity.

Develops Resilience
When exposed to some stress regularly, humans adapt to overcome them. It improves
their self-control and encourages them to take more chances in their life. Thus, with
increased resilience, there are decreased stress levels, leading you to perform better in
adverse situations.

Improved Focus
Stress causes hormonal changes in the body as it increases adrenaline levels in the
blood. Adrenaline is responsible for our “fight or flight” reaction in stressful situations. It
increases your energy and helps you focus on the task at hand. It also helps think of
more creative solutions to problems.

How Severe Stress Deters Productivity

Time Management Issues
When you feel overwhelmed and stressed with numerous tasks, you do not know where
to start. It leads to losing valuable time and energy, resulting in missed deadlines.

Distraction
Under increased stress, one may not process new things happening around them and
forget them easily. You easily become distracted, lose focus and become less
productive.

Health Problems
Stress can lead to a lot of negative effects on the human body. They include headaches,
anxiety, depression, fatigue, chest pains and increased irritability. When you are not
feeling well, you do not perform well either.

Stress Management
Scheduling
Prioritize your tasks and maintain a realistic schedule in which you can easily manage
tasks in the given amount of time. Evaluate yourself, what you can handle, how much
available time you have and plan accordingly.

Delegate
Learn to delegate tasks to others. You do not have to do everything on your own and it
is okay to ask for help. Hire a person whom you can give tasks regularly to decrease
your workload.

Scheduled Breaks
Working long hours with a hefty workload can lead to burnout. Adjust some breaks in
your schedule to help you relax and come back with a refreshed mindset to work. It will also help with productivity.
