KARACHI: Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) Vice Chancellor Prof Amjad Siraj Memon has stressed the need for accessible, evidence-based solutions to mental health issues.

Addressing a seminar organized by JSMU's Continuing Medical Education (CME) titled "From Self-Help to CBT: A Psychiatrist's Perspective on How to Steer Through Life," he said, "Mental health is a vital aspect of overall wellness, and it's crucial that we empower people in Pakistan,".

The seminar was aimed at integrating traditional self-help methods with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help individuals face life's complexities effectively.

The initiative is particularly timely given the shortage of mental health professionals in Pakistan, with only around 600 psychiatrists and 1,200-2,000 psychologists serving a population exceeding 220 million.

During her welcome speech, CME Director Dr. Rahat Naz stressed the importance of early intervention and said, "One-third of all mental illnesses begin before the age of 14, and half before age 18," adding that substance use also often starts early.

"Optimal stress levels are crucial for growth and achieving goals," explained Prof. Iqbal Afridi. He said, "Finding the right balance is key; both too little and too much stress can be harmful. Adopting a holistic approach to well-being helps individuals face life's challenges with resilience," he added.

Prof. Afridi also stressed the need for evidence-based techniques to make sustainable changes in individuals' lives beyond self-help strategies.

Dr. Asim A. Shah, Chief of the Division of Community Psychiatry at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston, Texas, discussed the comprehensive nature of mental health. "It encompasses psychological and social aspects of our lives," he noted.

With increasing drug abuse cases in Pakistan, including child addiction, Dr. Shah underscored the importance of empowering individuals to manage their mental health independently.

The seminar was also attended by JSMU Registrar Dr. Azam Khan, Principal of SMC-JSMU Prof. Masroor Ahmed, faculty members and HODs from JPMC, alongside psychiatrists from Karachi. JSMU students also participated in the event that concluded with a vote of thanks.
