KARACHI: Following the detection of a new polio case in Kemari district, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has called for improving vaccination to eradicate the crippling disease from the country.
He was speaking during a polio vaccination campaign at NJV School, where he was joined by Deputy Commissioner South Altaf Sario, Polio Campaign In-charge Irshad Sudhar, Rotary Club’s Aziz Memon, and other officials.
On the occasion, Mr Wahab administered polio drops to children and highlighted the use of advanced tools like the Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) to enhance the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating polio and urged parents to ensure their children are vaccinated.
He acknowledged past challenges, including misinformation and resistance, and called on the media to help improve public awareness.
The mayor announced plans to establish 15 new chlorine centers in Karachi by December and sought support from political leaders, including Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman and Syed Mustafa Kamal, for a polio-free Pakistan.
He said that Karachi successfully vaccinated 80pc of targeted children in the first phase of the ongoing polio drive in the city which aims to reach one million children.
Mr Wahab also highlighted efforts to generate affordable electricity to support the national grid and enhance Sindh’s contribution to Pakistan’s energy sector.
