KARACHI - National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) will soon establish Preventive Cardiology Department to protect people from developing heart diseases and also to highlight preventive strategies in the society.
This was stated by executive director of NICVD, Prof Nadeem Qamar at an awareness seminar held at Karachi Press Club (KPC). Organized by the KPC’s health and environment committee in collaboration with NICVD and PharmEvo was addressed, among others, by Dr Tariq Masood, Dr Kanwal Aamir, Dr Tahir Sagheer, Dr Jawaid Sial. Office-bearers of KPC were also present on this occasion.
Voicing concern over rising trend of cardiovascular diseases in the society, the NICVD chief deplored that our health structure is unable to provide treatment and diagnostic facilities to all cardiac patients, despite spending billions of rupees, annually.
He underscored the need for launching a massive awareness campaign about the cardiovascular diseases across the country.
He lauded the role of KPC’s health & environment committee in organizing such informative programmes for journalists and their families.
Prominent cardiologist Dr Tariq Masood said high blood pressure was one of the major reasons behind heart diseases.
He advised the patients suffering from high blood pressure to use medicines regularly so as to prevent themselves from becoming victims of heart attacks and strokes.
Dr Tahir Sagheer said increase in cholesterol level brightens the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases. He attributed increase in cholesterol level to lack of physical activity, excessive use of fast food and unhealthy diet, etc.
NICVD and PharmEvo on this occasion organized a camp where diagnostic facilities, including blood-pressure, sugar, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI) were available.
