ISLAMABAD: During a recent meeting with a high-level delegation from the Polio Oversight Board, comprising representatives from global health organizations, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his determination to eliminate polio from Pakistan.
During the meeting, the PM emphasised that all provinces are fully committed to eradicating the disease through collaboration with federal government, expressing confidence in Pakistan's anti-polio strategy.
The delegation comprised Christopher Elias from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Dr. Hanan Balkhy of the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF’s Regional Director Sanjay Wijesekera, and Dr. Andrea Fristedt from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The PM lauded the continued support of international partners, including the King Salman Foundation, BMGF, Rotary Foundation, UNICEF, and CDC. “With their steadfast support, we are optimistic about eradicating this debilitating disease,” he remarked.
The delegation commended Pakistan’s progress, with BMGF representatives acknowledging the effectiveness of its polio eradication strategy.
Dr. Hanan Balkhy underlined the importance of regional cooperation, urging neighbouring countries to share resources and maintain dialogue to tackle polio collectively.
The Prime Minister’s office confirmed the implementation of a third-party audit to assess the ongoing polio campaign. Special attention has been given to increasing vaccination rates in previously underserved areas, and the government has prioritised care for children affected by polio.
The meeting concluded on an optimistic note, with all stakeholders reaffirming their shared commitment to a polio-free Pakistan.
