Pakistan’s 1st Robotic Surgical procedure performed at CHK

KARACHI- In light of the concluding ceremony of the International multidisciplinary ‘Robotic Surgery Workshop’ at the OT complex, Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) and Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation (SIUT); Pakistan’s first successful Robotic surgical procedure was performed on a 55 year old female patient, visiting from Baluchistan.

The carried out procedure is called ‘Hysterectomy,’ requiring the removal of the uterus.

The patient suffered with intractable bleeding, acquiring multiple transfusions. The patient was said to be discharged after 24 hours.

Prof. Shamim Khan, King's College London and Dr Kankipati Shanti Raju from Guys and St Thomas Hospitals London, performed the procedure, along with a team of highly trained support staff.

Medical experts, across Pakistan have described this procedure as a major breakthrough in the field of Robotic Surgery, particularly in the field of Gynecology.

SIUT arranged this workshop, discussing the impact and benefit of robotic surgery in the field of urology, general surgery and gynecology. All these fields were comprehensively discussed during the sessions, where a live surgery was also performed via live telecast from OT Complex, Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK).

Various surgeons from Britain, alongside surgeons from SIUT and CHK participated in this workshop.

Cost of such procedures was discussed, while keeping all the benefits in mind.

The specialists expressed that the success of this procedure will open new avenues in the field of surgery, enhancing the quality of healthcare in Pakistan.
