More than 17,000 dog-bite cases recorded in the Karachi

KARACHI: Up to 17,000 dog-bite cases have been recorded in three major hospitals of Karachi from 1 January to 15 September 2020.

The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) registered a total of 6500 dog-bite cases at the Rabies Clinic. Similarly, Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) recorded 6000 cases, and nearly 5000 cases were recorded at the Indus Hospital Karachi.

Stray dogs have become a serious public health issue in the city. The population of stray dogs is increasing at an alarming rate in Karachi. If a person is bitten by a rabid dog and they are not vaccinated against rabies, there is no chance of survival.

In Karachi, dog bite cases are being reported from the slum areas of Ibrahim Hyderi, Korangi, Surjani, North Karachi, New Karachi, Baldia, Orangi, Keamari, Mehmoodabad, Liaquatabad, Federal B Area, Sohrab Goth, Orangi, Golimar, and other areas.
