KARACHI: Azra Fazal Pechuho, Sindh's Minister for Health and Population Welfare, launched a new obstetric and gynaecological section at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi.
The facility is dedicated to Dr Shereen Zulfiqar Bhutta, a lifelong advocate and practitioner providing women with health services. The institution would provide free services, facilities, and counselling to "poor, pregnant, and powerless women."
At the inauguration, Azra Fazal Pechuho stated that it was time to establish a centre of excellence and research in honour of Dr Shereen Bhutta, who has dedicated her life to serving humanity.
She noted that women leaders are necessary because they have the concerns of disadvantaged groups in mind.The Health Department and the Sindh government would provide full support for this unit, and the head of the Sindh government was impressed with the JPMC's training of devoted young doctors. She also stated that USAID assisted in establishing this unit.
Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta stated that this institution would be Pakistan's first public sector centre of excellence for women's health and research. In addition, he stated that this unit's top aim should be to train individuals who can go to underserved areas and provide services and knowledge to communities that lack access to this type of healthcare or expertise.
Dr Amjad Memon, the vice chancellor of JSMU, stated that some of the teachers and employees of this unit would lend their support and solidarity to the cause of women.
