KARACHI: Khushbakht Shujaat, former senator and prominent educationist, emphasized the need for proper training of children to prevent mental disorders, regretting that despite education today’s parents are failing to train their wards to ensure their mental health.

Speaking at the 18th Karachi International Book Fair held at the Karachi Expo Center under the Pakistan Publishers and Booksellers Association, Shujaat highlighted the talent of children, stressing the need for educating and training them to nurture their abilities.

Aziz Khalid, Chairman of the Pakistan Publishers and Booksellers Association, acknowledged the passion of book enthusiasts, despite the cost of books.

He advocated for the provision of affordable books to contribute to a more educated society and urged relevant institutions to fulfill their responsibilities in this regard.

During a seminar titled "Challenges for Parents Regarding Children" on the second day of the book fair, clinical psychologist Dr Daniyal Riaz, educationist Asila Jaliwani, Deputy Principal of Ziauddin Intermediate College Naheed Munir, and nutritionist Hina Anees addressed the audience.

Dr Daniyal Riaz spoke about the significant impact of the home environment on a child's mind, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere within the household.

Asila Jaliwani criticized the practice of parents providing reasons and explanations for their irresponsibility, deeming it incorrect.

The speakers pointed out that parents and relatives often pressure children to achieve high marks in education without considering their individual interests.

They argued that each child is unique, suggesting a halt to matriculation-level examinations to alleviate pressure and allow children to contribute to society according to their abilities.
