Mostly Women suffer from Orthopedic Disorders: President POA

Karachi: About 72 percent populations of the Pakistan (all age group) are living with various orthopedic disorders out of which 55 percent are women, this was stated by President, Pakistan Orthopedic Association (POA), Prof Dr Muhammad Parwez Anjum .

He shared these views while talking to the media persons during 3-day 28th International Pak Orthocon scientific program organized by Pakistan Orthopaedic Association (POA) in a local hotel. The 3-day international conference has started on 18 December and would end on 20 December 2014.

He said orthopedic diseases are most common in women as compared to men in our region due to demographic issues. He said neck pain, back pain, fracture and knee pain generally reported in youngster and children.

He said similarly majority of adult people were suffering from fractures, arthritis, backache, joints pain, and osteoporosis.  He informed that about 90 percent women over 45 year age and men over the age of 60 were living with various joint and bone problems in the country.

Prof Parwez improper diet, calcium deficiency and less physical activities were the major reason behind bones and joints disorders. He said treatment of orthopedic diseases was very costly and poor people could not afford it.

He said trauma related injuries common in youngsters due to not obeying the traffic rules.  He said excessive use of motorcycle also caused back pain and other bone disorders.

He said balance diet, proper use of milk and calcium intake in childhood would help to reduce risk of developing various bone and joint problems in elderly people.
He said aim of organizing conference to enhance the skill of youngsters, introduce them advancement in field through different scientific programs, workshops, conference and other activates. He said international conference held every year in different big cities of the country under rotation policy.

He informed that 25 speakers from America, Turkey, Belgium, India, Switzerland and other countries are participating in the event. He said speakers highlighted the problems were being faced by population of third world countries in orthopedic field. He said awareness program automatically help our young doctors and  general public about the management, treatment and prevention of orthopedic disorders.
