Junior doctors protest student’s rape, murder as IMA ends strike

KOLKATA: While the Indian Medical Association (IMA) ended its 24-hour strike, junior doctors at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata remained off duty, protesting the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate student on August 9.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage across India, with candlelight marches and the suspension of non-emergency services at hospitals. Activists are highlighting the persistent vulnerabilities faced by Indian women, despite stricter laws enacted after the 2012 Delhi gang rape case
In a statement, the victim’s father thanked the protesting doctors, saying, “My daughter is gone, but millions of sons and daughters now stand with me.” He voiced hope that the solidarity would catalyze meaningful change in the country.
The activists regret that the anti-rape legal reforms introduced in the country have fallen short in curbing violence against women.
The IMA, which ended its strike at 6am on Sunday, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enhance security for hospital staff, advocating for airport-level security measures due to the high number of female doctors.
Meanwhile, in Gujarat, over 6,000 trainee doctors have continued their boycott of non-emergency services for a third day, though private hospitals have resumed normal operations.
Dr. Dhaval Gameti of B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad confirmed that while their protest persists, they are providing emergency care.
Because of rising cases of dengue and malaria, the government has urged doctors to return to work. It is forming a committee to recommend safety measures for healthcare professionals. While many doctors have resumed regular duties, IMA officials have warned that emergency services might be halted if the government fails to implement adequate protective measures.
The All India Residents and Junior Doctors’ Joint Action Forum has pledged to continue its strike until a thorough investigation is completed.
At R.G. Kar Hospital, police have banned gatherings and deployed personnel in riot gear to maintain order.
