PM Shehbaz urges mass awareness on breast cancer

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the critical need for awareness and early detection of breast cancer, especially among women, during a message on the International Day Against Breast Cancer.
He highlighted that breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer affecting women globally, with a substantial number of deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries, including Pakistan.
Addressing the challenges in providing adequate screening and treatment facilities for breast cancer in the country, the prime minister stated that these hurdles can be overcome through a strong commitment to early diagnosis. “There is a 98% chance of permanent recovery when breast cancer is detected at an early stage,” he noted, urging women to take proactive steps by performing regular self-examinations.
Sharif acknowledged the positive effects of awareness campaigns in Pakistan, pointing to an increase in the reporting of early-stage breast cancer cases. He commended the media for its vital role in disseminating information and called on all stakeholders, particularly media outlets, to intensify efforts toward a comprehensive national awareness campaign.
“I urge all stakeholders, especially the media, to join forces in a holistic awareness campaign at the national level,” he said, adding, “With our collective efforts, we can significantly reduce breast cancer mortality in Pakistan and provide hope for a healthier future for all women.”
