‘Coronavirus may affect 70 percent of the population’

KARACHI: Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Karachi (MAJU), Prof Dr Kamran Azim, said that now we have to get in the habit of living with the coronavirus like other viral diseases like influenza, so we should not be complacent about the complete eradication of the coronavirus.

He said that in February this year, Mark Lipstich, a Professor of Epidemiology at the Harvard University in the United States, revealed that the coronavirus disease could attack 70%  of the world's population. Similarly, an article published in the leading British newspaper, The Guardian, in February also claimed that 60% of the world's population could be infected with the coronavirus.

He shared these views while talking at the MAJU faculty program. He also dismissed the impression that a large number of deaths were being reported as a result of the coronavirus infection. In fact, the death rate resulting from the coronavirus infection was less than 1%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), while the number of deaths resulting from diseases such as typhoid and dengue was approximately 50%.

Dr Kamran said that in the current situation, it is important to use sanitizer regularly and to wear masks compulsorily in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease.
