7.1M Diabetics in Pakistan People urged to avoid sedentary lifestyle

KARACHI- Around 7.1 million people are suffering from diabetes in Pakistan and the number of diabetic patients is expected to soar to 11.4m by 2030.

This was stated by prominent diabetologist, Dr Fatima Jawad while delivering a lecture on the topic of “Ramazan and Our Food” at Arts Council of Pakistan. The lecture was a part of an awareness programme held here under the aegis of Karachi Arts Council’s medical and social welfare committee. Dietician Tabassum Zahra, Dr SM Qaiser Sajjad and Dr Mehboob Baloch also spoke on the occasion.

According to Dr Fatima, 194m people are suffering from diabetes across the world and the number of cases is likely to swell by 333m in 2025.

Attributing the causes of the disease to excessive food intake, junk food, soft drinks, obesity, poverty, sedentary lifestyle and less exercise, she said: “Diabetes has become a common issue in the society, but we should learn some basic things to manage the disease without facing any complications, especially in the holy month of Ramazan.”

At the outset, the diabetologist said that incidences of diabetes cases are almost common in every family and the need of the hour is to adopt healthy lifestyle so as to prevent from its related complications.
