PESHAWAR: Tragedy struck in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Bajaur district on Friday, as unidentified assailants targeted a polio program official, resulting in his untimely death, while a police officer sustained injuries in the attack.

Dr. Abdul Rehman, the coordinator of the polio immunization program in Bajaur, became the victim of a brutal attack as he was returning from District Headquarters Hospital Khar in the Tarkhoo area of Mamond Tehsil. Unknown assailants opened fire on his vehicle, leaving Dr. Rehman critically wounded.

According to media reports, medical assistance was provided to the injured individuals, who were swiftly transported to DHQ Khar in critical condition. Unfortunately, Dr. Rehman succumbed to his injuries, marking a devastating loss.

This incident is the latest in a series of attacks targeting healthcare workers and security personnel involved in polio eradication efforts in the region. Just last week, a roadside bomb in Bajaur tribal district injured two individuals, further emphasizing the dangers faced by those dedicated to eliminating polio.

Since 2012, the toll of polio-related incidents stands at 109 lives lost, with 162 individuals, including 166 policemen, 87 health workers, and 31 civilians, suffering injuries. Thirteen people were also kidnapped during vaccination drives, underscoring the challenges and risks associated with this critical mission.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare workers and security personnel in their relentless pursuit of a polio-free future for the region.
