KARACHI: Various innovative products and scientific projects were showcased at the first-ever science fair recently organized by the Pharmacy Scince Club of the Karachi University, aimed at addressing real-world problems and contributing to societal welfare.
The event held at the newly constructed Faculty of Pharmacy building, drawing participation from students across various universities in Karachi.
On the occasion, speakers highlighted the significance of the event in encouraging the next generation of innovators and researchers.
With a focus on healthcare, environmental sustainability, and technological advancements, the students' projects demonstrated their commitment to improving society. The event inspired new ideas and promoted collaboration between institutions.
The daylong event was inaugurated by Prof Dr Muhammad Harris Shoaib, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at KU. He, along with the faculty, interacted with the students, explored their groundbreaking projects, and stressed the importance of research in the health sciences.
The event also featured guest speakers and a panel of distinguished judges who offered valuable feedback to participants.
The science fair included various categories, each reflecting the diverse talents of the students. In the “Pharmaceutical Sciences” category, three specialised sub-categories stood out.
The Technology sub-category was judged by Dr Zaad Hashmi and Yamna Majid, who assessed projects with the potential to transform the field.
The Management Science projects were also evaluated by Dr Zaad Hashmi, while the Computer Sciences category was judged by Usman Amjad, who reviewed several innovative models.
The Formulation sub-category was evaluated by Dr Talha Usmani, Dr Jibran Khan, and Dr Mahwish Fatima, who assessed the projects based on innovation and practicality. The Cosmeceuticals sub-category was judged by Kamran Alam and Shakeel Ahmed, who provided expert insight into the efficacy and market potential of the products presented.
Moreover, the Biotechnological Sciences category was judged by biotechnology experts Dr Ghias Ahmed and Dr Omair Anwar Mohiuddin. The Microbiological Sciences category, focusing on environmental and clinical microbiology, was evaluated by Rehana Saeed, Tazeen Hussain, and Sadaf Farooqui.
Meanwhile, Healthcare partners Sehat Kahani, Dawn Healthcare, and Nadeem Medicos played a key role in organising a Healthcare Bootcamp, where students had their vitals such as blood pressure and calcium levels checked, raising awareness about the importance of health monitoring. Beverage partner Quice ensured that attendees stayed hydrated throughout the event.
During the closing ceremony, awards were distributed to winners from each category, while all participants received certificates in recognition of their contributions.
Prof Dr Harris Shoaib commended the students for their active participation and praised both the organisers and participants for their dedication. Prof Dr Iqbal Azhar also addressed the audience, urging students to continue innovating, emphasising the critical role of technological advancements in shaping the future.
According to organisers, the science fair serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing the power of youth-driven innovation in tackling society’s pressing challenges. Special recognition was given to faculty members Dr Iyad Naeem, Dr Asia, and Dr Sana Sarfaraz, who played pivotal roles as patrons of the event.
