Zardari calls for collective action to combat breast cancer on awareness day

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari has called for enhanced public awareness and collective action at both individual and national levels to combat the rising mortality rate from breast cancer in Pakistan.
In his message on the International Day Against Breast Cancer, observed each year on October 19, the president emphasized the critical importance of this occasion in raising awareness about the disease and encouraging timely diagnosis and treatment. This year’s theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, “No One Should Face Breast Cancer Alone,” highlights the vital role of support, solidarity, and compassion for all those affected by this illness. Together, we can foster a community that prioritizes health and empowers individuals to seek the care they need.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of death among women in low- and middle-income countries. The incidence of breast cancer is particularly high in South Asian nations, largely due to a lack of awareness among women. In Pakistan, one in every nine women is at risk, and late diagnoses significantly contribute to high mortality rates. Economic barriers also prevent many from accessing necessary treatments.
To combat this, we must enhance awareness by addressing misconceptions and promoting healthy lifestyle changes. Pakistan requires comprehensive efforts to educate women about breast cancer, the importance of regular self-examinations, and mammographic screenings. Policymakers and health officials must prioritize disease control initiatives, including improved treatment options and individualized patient care.
Access to screening and early detection services is crucial for saving lives. The media plays a pivotal role in spreading awareness, and I urge print, electronic, and social media outlets to educate the public about breast cancer to help save thousands of lives.
Let us recommit to providing support, care, and hope to patients, families, and survivors of breast cancer. I am optimistic that our collective efforts—at individual, institutional, and national levels—will enhance the overall health and well-being of our population and ultimately reduce the mortality rate from breast cancer in Pakistan.
