KARACHI: The Sindh government is actively supporting the private sector in promoting medical tourism to boost the healthcare sector's growth and its contribution to the national economy, says Provincial Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 21st Health Asia Exhibition and Conferences, Dr. Pechuho highlighted the government's role in providing quality healthcare services, not only to local residents but also to overseas Pakistanis and expatriates, particularly in Karachi's public hospitals.
She termed the participation of international delegates and exhibitors in the event a positive development in the country’s healthcare sector, underscoring the private sector's contribution.
About the recent surge in viral diseases across Karachi, Dr. Pechuho pointed out that malaria, dengue, and chikungunya were affecting many residents. She said although vaccines are not available for these diseases, they can be managed through effective mosquito control measures, with support from local authorities.
Regarding polio eradication, Dr. Pechuho expressed optimism that the disease could be eliminated in Pakistan, along with neighbouring Afghanistan, given the regional nature of the issue.
She also emphasised the need for improved vaccination coverage to counter the resurgence of diphtheria in Sindh.
During a session titled “Future Hospital – Inward Medical Tourism,” health experts and hospital administrators committed to advancing medical tourism in Pakistan. They highlighted that local hospitals are already treating patients from Afghanistan and Iran, with the potential to expand services to other SAARC countries through joint efforts.
Indus Health Network CEO Dr. Abdul Bari affirmed that Pakistani hospitals offer high-quality healthcare to both domestic and international patients, with the caveat that the security situation in major cities must improve.
Meanwhile, Arshad Qaim Khani, CEO of the Prime Minister’s Health Programme, stressed the importance of affordable, high-quality treatment in promoting medical tourism
He urged the government to enhance logistics and security measures for expatriates and foreign visitors to improve the country’s healthcare image.
Health Asia Exhibition and Conferences Project Director Farhan Anis said the involvement of local health experts and foreign delegates would help address challenges in the healthcare sector and elevate its standards.
He added that the exhibition showcased significant progress in the industry, with several local companies presenting advanced medical equipment and technology.
