World first aid day - PRCS calls for promoting first-aid skills

KARACHI - Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) is one of the leading organizations in first-aid training in Pakistan, while the Red Cross & Red Crescent have been the world’s leading first-aid trainer and provider for more than 150 years.

This was stated by Red Crescent Sindh chapter’s chairperson Farzana Naek while speaking at a seminar on “First aid and ageing population” held here in connection with the `World First Aid Day’ at Thakur Rashid Gohar Training Institute of Sindh Red Crescent. More than 150 students and teachers from different medical colleges of the city, staff and officials, attended the seminar.

Highlighting the importance of the theme of the seminar, Farzana Naek said that it was aimed at building a positive image of ageing people as well as to recognize older people as an important resource of the society.

Underscoring the need for promoting first aid knowledge and skills around the globe, she announced the Pakistan Red Crescent Society has prepared and printed “First Aid Policy”, providing clear vision on the subject.  
SSP-Karachi Traffic Police Captain Faisal Abdullah emphasized the importance of first aid in the life, saying that it was not a medical subject, but it’s a life-saving technique before availing any medical service. The injured unconscious person has 5-8 minutes to survive and that is the key time to save his/her life by applying first-aid techniques, he added.
He said Training Institute of Sindh Red Crescent was conducting first-aid training courses countrywide so as to ensure that every home has a first aider.

In this regard, he requested Red Crescent to organize first-aid training for the traffic police officials.
Provincial Secretary of Sindh Red Crescent Kanwar Waseem urged the government to make first-aid training mandatory for all those applying for driving licence, besides introducing first-aid course in educational institutions.

Commandant Civil Defence Federal Government Training School, Karachi, Aliya and Pakistan Medical Association’s secretary general Dr Mirza Ali Azhar, who were invited as guest speakers, also emphasized the importance of first aid in our daily routine life.
Later, pamphlets and first-aid boxes were distributed, while live TV shows and Radio programmes were arranged to highlight the importance of first-aid training for drivers, students, labourers and housewives.
