JAMSHORO - A faculty member of Sindh University Dr Abdul Nabi Mirjat has discovered that bacteria cells communicate with one another and they give birth to different diseases like pneumonia when they are gathered on a single platform.
He discovered it in his PhD thesis which he completed on the topic “Quorum-sensing (QS)” in microbiology at Ocean University Qingdao, China. He recently returned home from China and held a meeting with Sindh University’s vice chancellor Prof Dr Abida Taherani.
Dr Mirjat told the VC that he has also done a one-year Chinese language course so as to have command over it.
Dr Taherani felicitated him over completing his PhD in microbiology and hoped that he would share his academic and research experiences with his students.
Dr Mirjat said: “His study shows that a single bacterium was not able to create any disease, but when the bacterial cells mingle with one another, they create diseases which harm human health.”
The scholar in his research further showed that the bacteria produced some particular type of chemicals such as N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) and through these chemicals, the tiny bacteria cells communicated with one another and expressed certain genes to perform various biochemical and physiological functions.
“Quorum-sensing is a communication system used by various bacterial species”, Dr Mirjat said, adding that with the help of a mechanism setup, the prokaryotic cells can behave like eukaryotes”.
