World Anatomy Day, marked on Oct 15, in recognition of the vital role anatomy plays in training healthcare professionals across the globe, coinciding with the death anniversary of Andreas Vesalius, ‘father of
modern human anatomy’ who died in 1564.
The International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) established the day during its 19th World Congress in London in 2019.
Anatomy, which explores the body's structure at both macroscopic and microscopic levels, is a cornerstone of medical education and practice.
As Hippocrates famously remarked, "Anatomy is the basis of medical discourse." It underpins a variety of healthcare disciplines, from medicine and dentistry to nursing, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy.
Vesalius, celebrated for his pioneering work, authored De humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem (On the Fabric of the Human Body), a landmark text that revolutionised anatomy education and shaped medical practice for centuries. His commitment laid the foundation for advancements in medicine and surgery that followed.
World Anatomy Day not only pays tribute to the field but also seeks to highlight its enduring importance. This year’s theme, "Anatomy in Motion," invites reflection on the dynamic nature of anatomical study, encompassing gross anatomy, microscopic anatomy, surface anatomy, clinical anatomy, and more.
The day serves as a reminder to enhance public awareness of anatomy, promote the diversity within the discipline, and recognise the invaluable contributions of cadaveric donors. It also underscores the need to address the shortage of donors and inspire young scientists to pursue careers in this essential field.
The day also provides an opportunity to reflect on the profound impact of anatomy on healthcare and our understanding of the human body, while honouring the legacy of visionaries like Vesalius.
