Multan: A grave inquiry report has emerged, confirming 25 patients contracted HIV following treatment at the dialysis unit of Nishtar Hospital. The distressing revelation comes in the wake of an earlier report detailing that 30 patients had tested positive for HIV, one of whom succumbed to the infection.
The hospital administration disclosed that the investigation committee has identified key lapses, holding both the Medical Superintendent of Nishtar Hospital and the Head of the Nephrology Department accountable for the tragic incident. The committee, formed to probe the matter, will present its findings to the Punjab government tomorrow.
In response to the initial report of HIV transmission, all dialysis unit records have been seized for further examination. The administration confirmed that two dialysis machines have been shut down to prevent additional infections. It was noted that the virus spread after an HIV-positive patient underwent dialysis on one of the machines, which was subsequently used for other patients without sufficient sterilization.
This troubling incident has raised serious concerns about hospital protocols and patient safety measures in Pakistan’s healthcare facilities. Authorities and the public alike are now awaiting the Punjab government’s response and potential policy changes to prevent future tragedies.
