SHANGHAI: More than half of the city's 25 million residents were restricted to their homes or residential compounds in April during China's largest Covid outbreak since the virus first appeared in Wuhan more than two years ago.

No car sold in Shanghai last month

The Shanghai Automobile Sales Association issued a statement Monday highlighting the zero sales number for the month, saying that nearly all dealerships in the city were closed.

According to the group, which represents more than 300 businesses, 26,311 vehicles were sold in the city in April of last year.

There were 1.06 million new automobiles or vehicles sold in China in April, down 36% from a year earlier, as per the data provided last week by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

CPCA showed a downfall of 36 per cent, which is quite significant. 

This $1.1 trillion is generated through the sales and service of automobiles, which circulates through the economy, generating money for suppliers, wages for assembly plant workers, income for small businesses, and tax revenue for the federal and state governments, among others. 

Additionally, the fact that the infrastructure is in place allows for on-demand transportation. Land use and pollution are two difficult-to-measure expenses associated with this infrastructure in addition to monetary ones.
