Karachi: Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, who is also Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), inaugurated Dow Institute of Cardiology (DIOC) to mark the 12th anniversary of the university.
On this occasion, the governor also made the university’s one megawatt (MW) gas turbine generator operational. Though the university has multiple standby power generators to provide uninterrupted electricity to its various departments, especially operation theatres, the gas turbine generator will be an additional source of power supply.
The inaugural ceremony of the DIOC and gas turbine generator’s installation was attended, among, others by Dow University’s vice chancellor Prof Dr Masood Hameed Khan and senior faculty members.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad said that the Dow Institute of Cardiology set up at the university’s Ojha Campus will provide best possible cardiac diagnostic and treatment facilities to the citizens under one roof.
Terming the establishment of DIOC `a milestone’ of the DUHS, he said that although two other public sector cardiac hospitals – National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) and Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) - had been providing affordable treatment to the people of vast area of the metropolis, the DIOC will cater to the needs of those residing in other parts of the city such as Gulshan-i-iqbal, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Malir, Safoora Goth and their adjoining localities and as such they will not have to travel long distance to avail facilities.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Prof Masood Hameed informed the audience that the facilities to be provided at the DIOC include preventive cardiology, clinical cardiology, interventional cardiology, paediatric cardiology, cardiology electrophysiology, cardiac surgery, paediatric cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, and anesthesiology.
