A study conducted by University College London examined 76 adults aged 50 to 83, finding that moderate to vigorous exercise significantly improved working memory (used for multitasking) and episodic memory (used for recalling everyday events). Unlike earlier research, which suggested cognitive gains peaked within 10 to 20 minutes post-exercise, this study shows the effects can persist through the next day.
The research also highlighted the crucial role of sleep. Participants’ sleep patterns were tracked over eight days, revealing that deep sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep enhanced the cognitive benefits of exercise. Every additional 30 minutes of deep sleep was linked to better memory retention of daily events.
