KARACHI: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed deep concern over the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of a global health emergency due to the Monkeypox outbreak, urging the government to implement urgent and stringent measures to prevent the disease from entering and spreading in Pakistan.

Given Monkeypox’s classification as a global health emergency, the PMA has urged the government to enforce rigorous restrictions at all entry points, including mandatory testing and quarantine for travelers arriving from affected regions.

In addition to these measures, the PMA calls for enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, and isolation of suspected cases to curb further transmission. Public awareness campaigns are also deemed essential to educate the population about Monkeypox’s symptoms, transmission, and prevention.

The PMA also advocates for the provision of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) and training for healthcare workers to ensure their safety in handling Monkeypox cases.

"Immediate action is crucial to address the Monkeypox threat," said a PMA spokesperson. "We stand ready to collaborate with the government and other stakeholders to develop and execute a comprehensive strategy to protect the people of Pakistan."

The PMA says it remains committed to safeguarding public health and will continue to monitor the situation, offering guidance and support to both the government and the public as needed.
