LAHORE: Following the World Health Organization's (WHO) warnings about global threat of monkeypox spread, the Punjab health department has issued a province-wide alert with directions to airport authorities to intensify monitoring of travelers, especially those arriving from international destinations.
The department’s advisory mandates direct surveillance of passengers and immediate quarantine for anyone showing monkeypox symptoms.
Public sector hospitals have also been directed to conduct prompt testing for suspected cases.
A letter has been sent to all district health authorities in Punjab, emphasizing the need for vigilance. Both government and private hospitals are required to test suspected cases without delay.
A new strain of monkeypox, known as M-pox, has been reported in parts of Africa, particularly in Congo and neighboring regions. This variant has affected both children and adults, with over 17,000 suspected cases and 517 confirmed deaths across 13 countries.
To address the situation, a special meeting is scheduled at the National Institute of Health (NIH) to discuss preventive strategies.
While no cases of the mpox variant have been reported in Pakistan to date, airports remain on high alert, with enhanced screening measures in place at entry points.
The WHO’s designation of monkeypox as a global emergency underscores the urgent need for countries to strengthen their public health defenses. Pakistan's proactive steps, including heightened airport monitoring, are crucial in preventing the potential spread of the virus within the country.
