FIR filed against hospital for administering wrong injection to minor

KARACHI: First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the administration of Darul Sehat Hospital under the sections of attempted murder and negligence after their staff administered wrong injection to a minor girl, which caused her to become paralysed.

The FIR stated that a high dosage of medicine was administered to the minor girl, Nishwa, which soon worsened her condition. The hospital administration has also accepted its mistake, the FIR read.

According to the report, two nine-month-olds, Nishwa Ali and Amisha Ali, daughters of Qaiser Ali, were brought to Darul Sehat, a private hospital in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi. The girls needed treatment for diarrhea. After undergoing treatment for a day at the hospital their condition improved. However, before discharging the infant patients, the hospital staff administered an injection to Nishwa after which her heartbeat abnormally increased. She also faced difficulty in breathing. The infant was shifted to the hospital’s ICU where she was placed on a ventilator.

According to the CT scan, Nishwa has become mentally paralysed.

Nishwa’s father, Qaiser Ali, informed that the incident occurred due to an overdose of potassium chloride (KCL) injected by untrained hospital staff. He complained that the hospital has recruited many amateur medical technicians and staff on low salaries putting the lives of patients in danger.

Another account claims that the mistake occurred after the staff got confused between two syringes containing different injections, which resulted in incorrect administration of the given injection.

According to the hospital administration, when Nishwa was admitted, she was suffering from gastroenteritis, for which a KCL injection of was instantly administered. Due to the abnormal heartbeat and shortness of breath, the patient was shifted to a ventilator after which she came out of danger.

The hospital administration has suspended the responsible staff. In addition, the administration has taken responsibility of all medical expenditures incurred on Nishwa.
