Malaria epidemic threatens Sindh as cases soar to over 16,000

ISLAMABAD: Last week, a total of 16,684 malaria cases were reported across various cities in Sindh province, including Karachi, Larkana, Khairpur, and Mirpur Khas, indicating an alarming rise in the disease's prevalence.
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), Larkana recorded the highest number of cases with 11,588, followed by Khairpur with 10,681 and Qamber with 7,998. Other significant reports included 7,230 cases in Mirpur Khas, 6,045 in Dadu, 5,984 in Badin, 5,703 in Sanghar, 5,126 in Tharparkar, 4,809 in Tando Allahyar, 4,673 in Sukkur, 4,590 in Nowshehro Feroze, 3,970 in Shikarpur, and 3,546 in Umarkot.
In Karachi, the breakdown of cases was as follows: 779 in Malir, 155 in West, 135 in East, 124 in South, 82 in Korangi, 52 in South, and 6 in Kemari. The surge in malaria cases is raising concerns about a potential epidemic in the region.
